Thought-Mapping Outcomes

This can help your child visualize cause and effect via creating a map of potential outcomes for specific actions.

    • Start with a central action (an example, “not completing homework”)
    • Branch out to immediate consequences
    • Extend to secondary effects
    • Include emotional impacts

An example script to start the conversation: You know how sometimes you struggle with homework? (empathy) Are you Ok if we explore some options? (options) Let’s map out together what might happen if you don’t turn in your science project. What could happen first? Then what? How might you feel at each step?” (willingness to offer support)

Research shows visual mapping helps neurodiverse children process cause-effect relationships more effectively. Physical representation makes abstract connections more concrete.

Implementation Steps:

    1. Draw central action in middle of page
    2. Use arrows to connect to immediate outcomes
    3. Add emotion icons at each stage
    4. Review path together
    5. Create “alternative ending” branches as in the sample chart

Here are two example charts.

Connect the consequence to their interest, not just getting a zero.
